One traditional item is the Zulu Love Letter, a pattern of beads that girls and young women would stitch for someone they were crushing on. Traditionally they were part of a larger necklace, but in recent years artisans have placed them on safety pins and sometimes do more modern designs like the South African flag or an AIDS ribbon to raise awareness. HELLO TRAVELERS! Next week is Thanksgiving, and I am grateful that much of my Vermont family finds itself in Los Angeles these days so we can celebrate together. For me, the day after Thanksgiving is usually devoted to wearing pajamas past noon, having pie for breakfast, taking a hike in the Angeles National Forest, and maybe digging out the advent calendar. I'm mindful that Thanksgiving weekend kicks off holiday shopping for a lot of people.
