Take a trip to the town of Nusnäs, Sweden, and you'll find artisans hard at work hand-shaping and painting these delightful red horses. Swedish farmers have been carving these for centuries as a toy for their little ones, and in homage to the horses they relied on for farmwork. Their fame took off after the 1939 World's Fair, where a giant Dala Horse stood at the entrance to the Sweden pavilion, and a national icon was born.
Our Passport Craft kit lets you paint your own solid wood horse. Try a traditional red horse with artisan brushstrokes, or get creative with a design from your imagination.
These horses are hand-sanded by a fellow social enterprise, Would Works, which provides work to people experiencing homelessness in LA. Their artisans work for a specific goal, like a pair of glasses, or interview-appropriate clothes. Would Works is giving people the dignity of work, a new skill, and reducing barriers to getting back on their feet. We love partnering with them!
This kit makes TWO of this craft, so enjoy with a friend, make a matching pair, or use one to practice your technique and one as your final product. Check out a video of the traditional painting technique here.
